Ms. Vartenigian Burhans continues her study of the pear as archetype. In these more recent works, though still iconic, the pear becomes contained and still, wholly itself, weighted and grounded. It becomes predominately feminine, strong yet vulnerable, beautiful yet blighted. It is the container of new life, holding within, the seeds of possibility. The pear, for Ms. Vartenigian Burhans, represents the feminine nature in each of us that submits itself to be in union with another for the sake of transformation. Within the confines of antique window frames, the pear is painted forever in company with that which was discarded and cast off. This union of ripened and weathered brings both to a fullness. The painted pear offers the frame new life, and the scarred frame with its own history, offers a home for the pear on its delicate glass window, a material not solid and immovable but imperceptively flowing and forever changing.
